Future Proofing: How Resilience Planning Supports the Future Functionality and Value of Fixed Assets and Infrastructure
Resilient cities are future-ready cities. They are more sustainable and understand what it takes to operate in a crisis, even in an uncertain future. They have justified confidence in their own capability and this is reflected in the community and commerce, attracting the best and brightest of the next generation. Non-resilient cities, fragile cities, see only the immediate future and risk a loss of community confidence in a crisis, even depopulation of the most capable and the associated loss in tax receipts. Resilience is the enabler of sustainable economic development and yet it cannot be forced, but rather encouraged and developed. The financial arguments for resilience vary by sector and location, yet they speak to the universal requirement of all businesses – to stay in business. The financial aspects of resilience are possibly to most compelling, yet as an extension of operational risk the language can be opaque. It can be difficult to clearly articulate and quantify the financial benefits of resilience for a business, asset manager, or municipality.
The Spring meeting on May 2 of the Sandford Fleming Forum explored the financial aspects of resilience, the value that it represents in the built environment, and what that means for insurers, developers and municipalities. We had three speakers uniquely placed to answer these questions, providing both institutional and professional views from risk management, insurance and urban development.
