Prof. Kwon graduated from Hanyang University in 2000. He earned his M.S. degree in Architectural Structure from Hanyang University in 2002 and second M.S. degree in Civil Engineering with emphasis on geotechnical engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005. Prof. Kwon earned his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2007. Prof. Kwon has carried out research in the field of earthquake engineering. His major research interest is on seismic performance and fragility assessment of civil structures through reliable numerical and experimental methods. He developed seismic fragility curves of a typical non-seismically designed reinforced concrete structure and a typical bridge structure in Midwestern U.S. He also carried out in-depth investigation on hybrid (numerical-experimental) simulation method in which a part of a structure can be represented experimentally and the rest are modeled numerically. The simulation method can take advantage of strengths of both experimental and numerical simulations which allow more accurate assessment of seismic performance of structures. He participated in field reconnaissance missions after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the earthquake in Peru 2007, and the earthquake in Chile 2010 and has co-authored reports and journal papers on the fragility of civil structures due to those natural disasters.
